This is the story of a nine-year-old child that arrives to the ravished Madrid of 1939, soon after the end of the Spanish Civil war. He is practically alone all the time and wanders around the city, observing in an amazed and fearful way the harsh spectacle of poverty. But he is still a child, so he also enjoys some moments of wonder and fun.
The structure of "The Child and the Beast" is that of a classic story in the style of the old tales where children, lost in a forest, walk through it coming across different characters that sometimes cause fear and others, some happiness. The music articulates the story, illustrating with pieces of very different nature what the child sees. The lyrics were written for the music, and the music of Jarkko Riihimäki composed for the story. So, this is a purely musical story, a teamwork in which the storyteller or songwriter is just one more member of the Linien Ensemble.
